Molted vs AgentMail

Both give your agent its own inbox. The difference is what happens when an email tries to take control of it.

AgentMail is the broader platform. It has IMAP and SMTP, calendars, pods for multi-tenant apps and a SOC 2 Type II report.

Molted is narrower and stricter by default. Mail that tries to instruct your agent is quarantined on every mailbox, your agent never sees the original, and duplicate sends are blocked on the server without a key from you.

Pick AgentMail if you need SOC 2 or IMAP today. Pick Molted if you want your agent to run its own email without building the guardrails yourself.

Side by side.

Screening incoming mail

Molted

On for every mailbox from the start. A message scored high risk for trying to instruct your agent is quarantined before your agent reads it.

AgentMail

Agent Armor, in AgentMail Labs (free while it's there) and on US accounts. An owner or admin turns it on. It starts in Monitor, which labels mail and delivers it as usual.

What the agent sees of a flagged email

Molted

A placeholder marked untrusted, with its risk level. The original stays out of your agent's context, and only a person can release it.

AgentMail

In Hold mode the message.received event is held back, but the message stays readable through the API, search and IMAP, so your agent has to skip the agent-armor-held label itself.

Duplicate sends

Molted

Checked on the server for every send. The same email to the same person inside a cooldown is blocked, across every agent on the mailbox.

AgentMail

An Idempotency-Key header you pass on each send. A retry with the same key within 24 hours returns the first message and sends nothing new.

Approving emails before they go out

Molted

A setting per mailbox. First emails to new contacts, or every email, wait for you to approve in the dashboard or the iPhone app.

AgentMail

Built from drafts and API key permissions. Your agent's key can't send, and the key behind your own approval tool sends the draft.

Handing a conversation to a person

Molted

Your agent hands you the thread with a note, and it can't email that contact until you hand the thread back.

AgentMail

Labels such as needs-human-review, which your own dashboard or scheduled job looks for.

Ways in

Molted

MCP (hosted at mcp.molted.email), a CLI, REST, webhooks and a live event stream. No IMAP or SMTP.

AgentMail

REST with SDKs, MCP, a CLI, webhooks, WebSockets, and IMAP and SMTP.

Beyond email

Molted

Email only.

AgentMail

Calendars, pods for multi-tenant apps, and AgentID sign-in for agents.

Compliance

Molted

No SOC 2 report yet. Operated from Sweden. API keys are hashed, and you can export or delete your data whenever you like.

AgentMail

SOC 2 Type II, first audited in 2025. Separate US and EU environments, with the EU region on the Enterprise plan.

When an agent signs itself up

Molted

Your agent can create the account and set it up. Paying is a person's call: your agent sends you the checkout link.

AgentMail

It starts with 1 inbox and 10 emails a day, and it can only email its human until that person verifies the account.

What it costs.

At 10 mailboxes the two are a dollar apart. Molted also counts inbound mail, and quarantined spam never counts. AgentMail's pricing page lists no inbound limit.

Choose Molted if

  • Your agent reads mail from strangers and acts on it, so screening has to be on and has to bind.
  • You want duplicates, cooldowns and suppressions enforced without writing them yourself.
  • You only want to be pulled in for handoffs and approvals, on the web or your phone.
  • You're one builder or a small team, with up to 50 mailboxes.

Choose AgentMail if

  • You need a SOC 2 report or an EU region today.
  • Your agent needs IMAP or SMTP, or a calendar.
  • You're building a multi-tenant product and want pods.
  • You want more than 50 inboxes on a self-serve plan.

Moving over.

Your agent can do it. It signs up from the command line, gets a mailbox, and connects over MCP. Bring your own domain on Solo or Team when you're ready.

Questions.

Is Molted an AgentMail alternative?
Yes. Both give each agent its own address and inbox over an API and MCP. Molted turns its safety checks on for every mailbox by default and your agent can't switch them off, while AgentMail leaves more of that to you and covers more ground (IMAP, calendars, pods).
Does AgentMail screen for prompt injection?
Yes, with Agent Armor, which was in AgentMail Labs when we checked. It starts in Monitor mode, which labels mail and delivers it as usual. Its Hold mode holds back the notification, while the message stays readable through the API. Molted quarantines high-risk mail on every mailbox, and your agent never sees the original.
Which is cheaper?
At 10 mailboxes they're close: Molted Solo is $19 a month and AgentMail Developer is $20, each with 10,000 sends. Above that, Molted Team is 50 mailboxes for $79, and AgentMail's next plan, Startup, is 150 inboxes for $200. Molted also counts inbound mail, which AgentMail's pricing page doesn't list a limit for.
Does Molted have a SOC 2 report?
Not yet. If you need one today, AgentMail has a SOC 2 Type II report.

Hand it to your agent.

It sets up its own inbox. You decide how much it does on its own.
